Oil prices moved lower on Wednesday as investors processed the news of a ceasefire extension announced by the United States. Brent Crude Oil futures fell by 32 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $98.16 per barrel, while West Texas Oil futures dropped 53 cents, or 0.6%, to $89.14. These declines followed a session on Tuesday where both benchmarks had surged by approximately 3%. The market reaction comes after President Donald Trump announced he would indefinitely extend the ceasefire with Iran to allow for continued diplomatic efforts. The conflict has caused significant human loss and volatility in the global economy. However, the unilateral nature of the announcement has raised doubts regarding whether Israel or the Iranian government will agree to the extension of the truce, which originally began two weeks ago. Tensions remain high as the U.S. Navy maintains its blockade of Iranian shores, a situation that Iranian officials have characterized as an act of aggression. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for roughly 20% of the world's supply of oil and Natural Gas, remains largely paralyzed. Recent shipping data shows that only three vessels have moved through the waterway over the last 24 hours. In Europe, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the Druzhba pipeline is ready to resume the flow of oil from Russia. Despite this, industry sources suggest that Russia plans to halt oil exports from Kazakhstan to Germany via the same pipeline starting in early May. Market participants are now looking toward inventory data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Early reports from the American Petroleum Institute indicated a 4.5 million-barrel decrease in crude inventories last week, alongside declines in gasoline and distillate stocks. > "If the EIA confirms the draws and U.S. weekly exports of both crude oil and refined products remain robust, this will be taken as confirmation that consumers in Europe and the Far East are scrambling to secure oil supplies wherever, whenever, and however they can," PVM analysts said. The broader economic environment continues to influence energy markets, with the EUR/USD exchange rate currently at 0.8520 euros per dollar, affecting the purchasing power of international buyers for dollar-priced crude.
