The government of Norway has announced its decision to take over the planning process for the Fen rare earth deposit, which is recognized as the largest in Europe. This move is designed to accelerate development after a recent resource assessment nearly doubled the site's estimated size. Last month, the project's developer estimated that the field contains 15.9 million metric tons of rare earth oxide in indicated and inferred resources, marking an 81% increase from 2024 projections. Currently, Europe has no operational rare earth mines, making the development of this southern Norwegian site a priority in the effort to reduce dependence on China.
