New Zealand's business confidence has soared to its highest level since March 2014, according to the latest survey from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER). A remarkable 48% of firms surveyed in Q4 2025 expect general business conditions to improve, a significant leap from the 18% recorded in the previous quarter. This dramatic 30-percentage-point increase underscores a growing belief that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) interest rate cuts are beginning to stimulate economic recovery across all sectors and regions.
The survey results, released today, mark a critical inflection point for New Zealand's economy, which had contracted in three of the last six quarters before returning to growth in Q3 2025. On a seasonally adjusted basis, 39% of firms expressed optimism, compared to 17% in the prior period. Capacity utilization also saw a modest rise to 89.8% from 89.1%, further supporting the notion of an economic rebound.
