New York Lawmakers Move to Pass One Year Data Center Ban
New York legislators are expected to approve a one-year pause on new data center construction to study environmental impacts and grid strain. The bill also establishes new electricity rates and labor standards while addressing concerns over rising utility costs for residents.
Lawmakers in the United States are expected to pass a one-year moratorium on new data center construction in New York before the legislative session ends this week. The legislation scales back an earlier proposal from Assemblymember Anna Kelles and Sen. Liz Krueger for a three-year ban on facilities exceeding 20 megawatts, which would have required the Department of Environmental Conservation to study impacts and adopt new regulations. This pause allows the state to evaluate the impact of energy-intensive infrastructure on local utility grids and environmental goals.
