New data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York indicates that attempts by residents in the United States to access new credit reached their highest point in nearly four years this February. According to the latest Survey of Consumer Expectations Credit Access report, application rates are at their peak since October 2022. The New York Fed noted that much of this demand is focused on requesting higher limits on existing credit cards rather than seeking entirely new loans. While demand has surged, consumers are finding it easier to obtain approval. The rejection rate for new credit applications dropped to 15.9% in February, marking the lowest level recorded since June 2021. However, the report also highlighted a contradictory trend: lenders have been closing accounts at a record high rate over the past year, though the specific reasons for these closures were not disclosed. This data release comes as the Federal Open Market Committee prepares to meet and discuss interest rate policy. These deliberations occur in the shadow of geopolitical conflict involving Iran, which has contributed to rising oil prices. Before the start of combat, policymakers were already managing inflation levels above their targets and a sluggish labor market. While markets previously anticipated rate cuts later next year, the current meeting is expected to result in rates being held steady. The surge in energy costs is projected to fuel inflation further while potentially slowing economic growth as households redirect spending toward fuel and utilities. Financial resilience among consumers appears to be softening, as the New York Fed report found that the percentage of respondents who believe they could cover an unexpected $2,000 expense decreased slightly to 63.3%. This suggests growing challenges for lower-income households compared to wealthier demographics in the current economic environment.
