NATO says U.S. troop cuts from Europe to take years

NATO says U.S. troop cuts in Europe will take years as allies build capabilities. This follows a decision to pull 5,000 troops from Germany during May 2026.

The United States will reduce its military footprint in Europe by roughly 5,000 troops over several years to allow allies to build replacement capabilities. This drawdown follows the cancellation of long-range Tomahawk missile deployments in Germany. European officials expressed surprise at the timing after U.S. officials linked the decision to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism of U.S. strategy.

### Strategic Transition Replaces Hasty Withdrawal The planned reduction in the 80,000-strong U.S. force will be an ongoing process rather than an immediate exit. NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Alexus Grynkewich said on Tuesday that the move allows the U.S. to limit its presence as the European pillar of the alliance strengthens. Grynkewich noted the decision would not affect the alliance's ability to execute current defense plans.
