A coalition of international powers has proposed the creation of a safe maritime corridor to facilitate the evacuation of approximately 20,000 seafarers currently stranded in the Gulf. The initiative, presented to the United Nations' shipping agency on Wednesday, comes as hundreds of vessels remain anchored following threats from Iran to target ships attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz.

The formal proposal was submitted during a meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) governing council in London by Bahrain, Japan, Panama, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. The framework received immediate support from the United States, with the primary objective of protecting the lives of merchant sailors caught in the crossfire of regional hostilities.
