Mistral raises 830 million dollars for AI data center
Mistral raised 830 million dollars in debt to buy 13,800 Nvidia chips for its Paris data center. The project aims to bolster European AI infrastructure.
Mistral, the leading artificial intelligence provider based in France, has successfully raised $830 million in debt financing to significantly expand its computing infrastructure. The capital will be utilized to acquire 13,800 high-performance chips from NVIDIA Corporation for a major data center located in Bruyeres-le-Chatel, near Paris. This facility is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026, marking a pivotal step in Europe’s efforts to establish a competitive AI footprint against the United States and China.

The debt raising was supported by a consortium of seven banks, including BNP Paribas S.A., CREDIT AGRICOLE SA, HSBC Holdings plc, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc.. This investment highlights growing confidence in European AI firms as they challenge the market dominance of U.S. tech giants such as Microsoft Corporation, Alphabet Inc., and Amazon.com, Inc..
Mistral's expansion strategy extends beyond its home country. The startup recently unveiled plans for a second facility in Sweden and aims to manage 200 megawatts of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027. By offering localized AI models and infrastructure, the firm positions itself as a sovereign alternative for governments and enterprises, including its current work providing models to the French armed forces.
Chief Executive Arthur Mensch emphasized the strategic importance of the project in a statement shared with Reuters.
Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe.
The financing deal, which marks Mistral's first debt raising, is scheduled for official announcement on Monday. The company previously selected the Bruyeres-le-Chatel site in February 2025 as it scales operations to meet rising demand for localized AI services.
