The historic glassmaking furnaces of Firozabad, known as the glass heartland of India, are burning at record lows as conflict in the Middle East disrupts critical energy supplies and global shipping routes. The industry, which requires furnaces to maintain temperatures above 1,000 degrees Celsius to keep glass molten, is reeling from gas shortages that have forced thousands of day laborers out of work during what is typically the peak production season. This energy crunch highlights a significant vulnerability in the national economy, as the government often prioritizes gas supplies for households and agriculture over industrial manufacturing when supplies dwindle.

The crisis comes at a precarious time for the broader manufacturing sector, which New Delhi aims to expand from 17% to 25% of the gross domestic product. Reflecting these headwinds, the manufacturing flash PMI from HSBC HOLDINGS PLC dropped to a four-and-a-half-year low in March, signaling widespread instability across various sectors from textiles to high technology. In Firozabad, where the glassware industry supports up to 500,000 direct and indirect jobs, production has plummeted by an estimated 40% since early March. Rajkumar Mittal, an official with the local industry syndicate, expressed deep concern over the duration of the conflict.
