Mexico says USMCA goods exempt from US labor tariffs

Mexico announced that goods meeting USMCA rules of origin will be exempt from a proposed 10% U.S. tariff tied to forced labor investigations. This clarification covers roughly 85% of Mexican exports and follows consultations with the U.S. Trade Representative.

Mexico secured an exemption for 85% of its exports from a proposed 10% United States tariff linked to forced-labor enforcement investigations. The relief applies to all goods meeting rules of origin under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) following consultations with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. This exemption ensures the majority of Mexican trade remains stable while the United States targets global labor enforcement gaps.

### USMCA Rules Shield Majority of Trade The Mexican Economy Ministry confirmed the exemption following consultations with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Under the agreement, goods that qualify as North American-made will bypass the 10% levy. This protection also extends to products already covered by Section 232 orders, such as autos, steel, and aluminum.
