Industrial gold production in Mali
MLexperienced a sharp 22.9 percent decline in 2025, reaching 42.2 metric tons compared to 54.8 tons recorded in 2024. This significant drop in the output of goldwas primarily driven by a two-year standoff between the national government and Barrick Gold Corporation over the implementation of stricter mining regulations. These events caused a supply disruption that was felt across global gold commodity markets and shifted the competitive landscape within the Maligold mining sector.
The dispute between the government and the Canadian miner based in Canada
CAresulted in the Loulo-Gounkoto complex being placed under provisional administration. While a deal was eventually struck late in 2024, the impact on operations was severe. The complex, which had been the nation's largest producer of gold, reopened in July 2025 under state-appointed administration but struggled with persistent logistical issues that capped its output. Consequently, the site produced only 5.5 tons of goldin 2025, a 76 percent decline from the 22.5 tons produced in 2024.
