The government of the Maldives has formally requested fuel supplies from India as regional energy security faces mounting pressure from ongoing conflict in the Middle East. New Delhi, currently the world's fourth-largest refiner, is already facilitating commercial fuel shipments to Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Indian foreign ministry, confirmed the outreach during a recent news conference. > The government of Maldives has reached out to us for supply of petroleum products on both a short-term and long-term basis, and the request is being examined keeping in mind our own availability and needs. Historically, the Maldives has sourced the majority of its petroleum requirements from Oman. However, maritime logistics in the region have been severely compromised by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. This geopolitical tension has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery for global energy transit, impacting the flow of Brent Crude Oil. Indian officials are also monitoring the energy needs of other Indian Ocean nations, including Mauritius and Seychelles, though neither has submitted a formal request for assistance at this time. Meanwhile, New Delhi is engaged in diplomatic efforts with Tehran to ensure the safe passage of tankers currently immobilized in the Strait. According to Mukesh Mangal, an additional secretary in the federal shipping ministry, 18 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the restricted waterway. Despite these challenges, Indian refiners are preparing to resume imports of Iranian crude following a sanctions waiver granted by Washington. Data from the LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE GROUP indicates that the sanctioned vessel Ping Shun, carrying Iranian oil, is currently signaling its destination as the Indian port of Vadinar, although local authorities have not yet confirmed its scheduled arrival.
