Automakers Record $2.3 Billion in Expected Tariff Refunds
Ford and GM are booking anticipated refunds after a court ruling struck down certain import duties. The industry faces potential backlash while managing costs.
Global automakers recorded $2.3B in expected tariff refunds this week following a United States Supreme Court ruling against import duties. The industry is reclaiming a portion of $166B in total reimbursements due to importers under the Trump administration. These accounting gains boost bottom lines but risk political backlash as trade policies shift toward fossil fuels and domestic manufacturing.
FORD MOTOR CO told investors it expects a $1.3B reimbursement for payments made under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. GENERAL MOTORS CO anticipates recovering $500M. MERCEDES-BENZ GROUP AG also recorded expected refund income on its first-quarter books.
