LG Energy Solution Ltd , a key player in the electric vehicle battery supply chain, has announced a fourth-quarter operating loss of 122 billion won. This figure significantly exceeds analyst predictions, which anticipated a 77 billion won loss. The Seoul-based battery manufacturer attributes the downturn to a combination of weakened demand from electric vehicle makers and the cancellation of substantial contracts with major automakers.
The most notable contract cancellations came from Ford Motor Company , which withdrew from a 9.6 trillion won agreement, and Freudenberg Battery Power Systems, which canceled a 3.9 trillion won deal. These cancellations are compounded by production halts at two joint-venture battery plants with General Motors Company in Tennessee and Ohio. The production suspension, expected to last approximately six months starting in January, reflects General Motors' strategic decision to take a $6 billion writedown on its electric vehicle investments.
