Leela Palaces expects growth from luxury room shortage
The hotel group reported a 19% revenue increase for the nine months ending December 31. CEO Anuraag Bhatnagar expects the trend to continue into fiscal 2027.
The luxury hospitality sector in India is set for a period of robust expansion, with Leela Palaces Hotels & Resorts projecting strong growth for fiscal 2027. The company is positioning itself to capitalize on a significant shortage of luxury hotel rooms coupled with rising demand from the nation's increasingly affluent population.
While broader consumer spending in the country has become uneven, the luxury segment continues to thrive. Wealthy consumers are maintaining high levels of discretionary spending, benefiting sectors ranging from high-end jewelry to premium spirits and luxury lodging. Anuraag Bhatnagar, the Chief Executive Officer of Leela Palaces, noted that the market is currently witnessing a structural shift.
"We are at just a point of inflection of a multi-decade growth story in luxury consumption."
According to Bhatnagar, the trend is being further accelerated by a rise in travel frequency among domestic tourists. Leela Palaces, which is backed by Brookfield Asset Management, currently manages a portfolio of 23 hotels. The group has outlined plans to expand its footprint to at least 35 properties over the next five to seven years to meet the growing demand.
The company's financial performance underscores this momentum. For the nine months ending December 31, Leela Palaces reported a 19% increase in revenue from operations, totaling 10.43 billion rupees. Core earnings rose by 24% to 5.4 billion rupees during the same period. Since its market debut in June, the hotel chain has consistently outperformed analyst estimates, a trend it expects to maintain.
Supply constraints remain a key factor in the industry's outlook. With only approximately 30,000 luxury hotel keys available across the country, the limited inventory is driving up both occupancy and pricing. In the December quarter, occupancy reached 71%, while revenue per available room saw a 20% year-over-year increase.
Despite a recent strategic investment in the United Arab Emirates, where the company acquired a 25% stake in a luxury resort on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah, the primary focus for Leela Palaces remains its domestic operations. The company intends to prioritize its expansion within the Indian market to capture the long-term growth of the local luxury sector.
