A leaked audio recording featuring the foreign minister of Hungary and his counterpart from Russia has surfaced, revealing private discussions regarding European Union sanctions. The recording, released by the Poland-based investigative outlet Vsquare.org, comes just days before a pivotal national election that may decide the future of the country's diplomatic alignment.

The audio purportedly captures an August 2024 conversation between Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In the clip, Lavrov reminds Szijjarto of a commitment to assist in removing the sister of a Russian businessman from the EU sanctions list. Szijjarto indicated that both his nation and Slovakia would submit a formal proposal to have the individual removed.
