Takaichi Scrutinized Over Bank of Japan Policy Pressure
Finance Minister Katayama denied reports that Prime Minister Takaichi pressured the central bank to delay rate hikes. She stressed the need for BOJ autonomy.
Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing renewed scrutiny regarding her administration's stance on monetary policy. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama was questioned in parliament about whether the premier had exerted pressure on the central bank to delay further interest rate increases. Although the Bank of Japan is legally independent, it has frequently encountered political pressure to maintain stimulus or intervene during significant shifts in the USD/JPY exchange rate.
Speculation that Takaichi might influence the central bank to adopt a slower pace of tightening grew following reports of a meeting between her and Governor Kazuo Ueda last month. During that session, Takaichi reportedly expressed reservations about additional rate hikes. When asked about these reports, Katayama maintained that she had nothing to add beyond Ueda’s own statements, which clarified that no specific policy requests were made.
