Japan Considers Cutting Inflation-Linked Bond Buybacks

Japan may reduce inflation-linked bond buybacks to 15 billion yen as investor demand grows. The move follows rising market inflation expectations in early 2026.

Japan is considering a reduction in its buybacks of inflation-linked government bonds as investor demand for the securities grows alongside rising inflation expectations. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that the Ministry of Finance may cut its purchase amounts to 15 billion yen (approximately $94.11 million) for April and June, down from the 20 billion yen monthly buybacks seen in the first quarter of the year.

The potential policy shift follows a notable increase in market-based inflation expectations. In late January, the break-even inflation rate exceeded 1.9% for the first time, signaling a heightened desire among investors for assets that protect against rising consumer prices. These securities are designed so that principal and interest payments adjust in line with inflation rates.
