Japan trade minister urges US to maintain agreed tariff terms

Trade Minister Ryosei Akazawa spoke with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Monday. He requested that Japan retain its current tariff status as agreed.

Japan JPJP Trade Minister Ryosei Akazawa held a telephone conversation with United States USUS Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on February 24, 2026, to address the application of trade policies between the two nations. During the call, Akazawa formally requested that Japan's treatment under new U.S. tariff measures be no less favourable than the terms established under last year's agreement.
