Japan Economic Health Index Slips Amid Supply Disruptions
Japan's economic index fell in February as chip and auto output declined. Rising fuel costs and supply gaps are also driving up bankruptcies among small firms.
Economic health in Japan showed signs of strain in February as a key indicator of current activity declined. Government data released on Tuesday suggests the economy was already softening before the full impact of geopolitical conflict in the Middle East began to weigh on domestic industries.
The coincident indicator index, which tracks the present state of the economy, dropped 1.6 points from the previous month to 116.3. This represents the first decline in two months, driven primarily by a reduction in shipments of semiconductor chips and manufacturing equipment, alongside a slowdown in automotive production.
