Ivory Coast cocoa stocks pile up as exporters reject fixed prices

Ivory Coast cooperatives face rising debt as exporters refuse to pay mandated prices. The state regulator is buying surplus stock to support struggling farmers.

Exporters are currently refusing to pay the government-guaranteed farmgate price of 2,800 CFA francs per kg for cocoa in Ivory Coast CICI, causing a significant buildup of unsold stock. This refusal has led to bags of cocoa piling up in Ivory Coast cocoa warehouses, leaving cooperatives unable to pay farmers for their deliveries. This disruption in the cocoa sector comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with the start of the 2025/26 crop season and following a recent slump in global cocoa prices to their lowest in more than two years.
