The competition regulator in Italy has launched an investigation into Edenred S.A. and its local subsidiary over allegations of abusing its dominant position within the national employee meal voucher market. The watchdog, known as AGCM, announced on Thursday that its officials, supported by the Italian Financial Police, conducted inspections at the offices of the company's Italian unit on Wednesday.

The investigation focuses on a strategy allegedly employed by the company headquartered in France to transfer unjustified costs onto large-scale retail chains. According to the AGCM, the firm appears to have unilaterally altered the technical requirements for accepting electronic meal vouchers. Rather than allowing retailers to connect their checkout systems directly to its platforms, the regulator claims the company mandated the use of third-party interconnection providers, which significantly increased operating expenses for major retail groups.
