The government of Italy is evaluating a reduction in fuel excise duties as domestic industries warn that the conflict in the Middle East could trigger a significant surge in energy costs. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that the administration is studying the possible activation of so-called mobile excise duties, a fiscal mechanism designed to offset rising pump prices using surplus tax revenue. Under this system, the state can utilize higher-than-expected value-added tax (VAT) receipts—which increase alongside fuel prices—to subsidize a decrease in the fixed excise taxes levied on petrol and diesel.
