Indian Benchmarks Gain on Peace Hopes and Low Oil Prices
Indian benchmarks rose as investors eyed U.S.-Iran peace talks and lower oil prices. Weak earnings from Wipro and HDFC Life limited the market advance.
Indian equity markets recorded gains on Friday as investors looked forward to potential diplomatic breakthroughs in the United States and Iran peace negotiations scheduled for the weekend. The Nifty 50 index climbed 0.34% to 24,279, while the Sensex rose 0.38% to 78,290.04. Both benchmarks have advanced approximately 1% over the course of the week, building on a robust 6% surge in the preceding week, which represented the strongest five-day performance in half a decade. Participation was broad-based, with 14 of 16 major sectors advancing and both small-cap and mid-cap indices adding 1% each. Market sentiment in India was further supported by a decline in energy costs, with Brent Crude Oil trading below the $100 per barrel mark for the ninth consecutive session. Lower oil prices are generally viewed as a positive development for the Indian economy, which ranks as the world's third-largest importer of crude. In the broader Asian region, markets excluding Japan saw a 0.9% dip but remained on track for weekly gains ahead of the geopolitical talks. However, the upward momentum was partially restrained by disappointing corporate earnings in the technology and insurance sectors. WIPRO LTD saw its shares fall by 3% after the company issued a cautious revenue forecast, citing spending constraints among its American banking and financial services clients. Similarly, HDFC LIFE INSURANCE CO LTD dropped 3.2% following a reported decrease in its quarterly value of new business, despite a slight increase in overall profit. Market analysts at Bajaj Broking noted that while the outlook remains cautiously optimistic, a cooling-off period may be imminent. > While investor sentiment improved this week ahead of the U.S.-Iran talks over the weekend, a period of consolidation is likely after the swift upward move in benchmarks earlier this week. Looking ahead, the Nifty 50 is expected to fluctuate between 23,400 and 24,400 points as the market processes the results of the diplomatic talks and upcoming financial disclosures from major private lenders. Investors are particularly focused on the quarterly reports from HDFC BANK LIMITED and ICICI BANK LTD, both of which are scheduled for release this Saturday.
