Indian Rupee Drops to 93.3950 as Global Oil Prices Rise
The Indian rupee fell 0.7 percent on Monday as Brent crude oil climbed above 102 dollars per barrel. Local stocks and bonds also declined amid regional tensions.
The Indian rupee fell sharply on Monday as a renewed surge in oil prices placed significant pressure on local financial assets. The currency of India declined 0.7% to settle at 93.3950, while the KOTAK NIFTY 50 index dropped nearly 2%. Additionally, the yield on the benchmark 10-year government bond climbed more than six basis points to reach 6.973%.
This market turbulence follows an announcement from the United States military regarding a planned maritime blockade of all traffic entering and exiting ports in Iran. The move was initiated after weekend peace negotiations failed to reach a resolution, threatening a fragile ceasefire. In response to the geopolitical escalation, Brent Crude Oil futures rose over 7% to $102.2 per barrel.
