India Increases Checks on Overseas Investment Flows
The Reserve Bank of India and SEBI have increased queries into overseas direct investments to prevent the misuse of capital routes as currency pressure mounts. Regulators are specifically examining family offices and corporate structures to ensure offshore remittances have clear business purposes.
India regulators are tightening scrutiny on overseas capital outflows by firms and family offices to defend a weakening currency. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued at least 10 queries over the past three weeks to investigate potential misuse of investment routes. This rare intervention aims to protect foreign exchange reserves as surging oil prices and capital exits pressure the rupee.
### Regulators Target Opaque Offshore Structures The RBI is investigating whether funds were routed abroad without clear business purposes or tangible asset backing, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the matter. This intervention focuses on the pace of capital outflows and their impact on national reserves. While the capital account remains partially open, the RBI and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) are flagging inflated valuations of offshore assets.
