India industry warns of solar cell shortage from June rules
An industry body warns that India faces a solar cell shortage from June due to local sourcing rules. The mandate could delay projects and increase costs.
India is facing a potential shortage of solar cells starting in June due to new domestic sourcing requirements. The North India Module Manufacturer Association (NIMMA) warned in a letter to the renewable energy ministry that these rules could significantly hinder the progress of clean energy projects across the country.
Currently, the domestic production capacity for solar cells stands at approximately 25.6 gigawatts (GW), while the national demand is estimated at 50 GW. To bridge this gap, the industry has historically relied on imports, with China accounting for over 90% of the supply. NIMMA noted that about 55% of the cells produced locally utilize older technology that is rarely compatible with the requirements of modern solar installations.
