Indian grain prices tumble as new trade deal allows duty free US imports

Indian corn and soybean prices fell today after New Delhi agreed to duty-free US imports. Farmers have called for nationwide protests starting tomorrow morning.

The Government of India ININ has reached an agreement to allow duty-free imports of U.S. soyoil and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as part of a new trade framework with the Government of the United States USUS. This decision, which follows an interim framework announced last week, has coincided with a sharp decline in domestic agricultural prices. Since the announcement, the Indian soybean market has seen prices fall by approximately 10 percent, while the Indian corn market has experienced a drop of about 4 percent.
