Indian Banks Show Limited Interest in RBI Repo Operation

Indian banks took 480 billion rupees in a repo operation on Tuesday. Analysts say the low demand signals a need for more flexible tools to manage liquidity.

Indian banks showed a limited appetite for the central bank's cash infusion on Tuesday, indicating a preference for shorter-term liquidity management over longer-term commitments. Despite a narrowing liquidity surplus in the financial system, the response to the latest funding operation suggests that lenders are seeking greater flexibility in their borrowing.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offered 1.50 trillion rupees through a seven-day variable repo rate operation. However, financial institutions in India borrowed only 480 billion rupees ($5.2 billion), even as the banking system's liquidity surplus dropped to a seven-week low. This muted demand signals that term funding—lending for periods longer than a day—is currently less attractive to banks.
