India boosts renewable energy amid gas supply issues
India is fast-tracking wind and battery projects to counter gas shortages. The government has also ordered coal plants to run at full capacity for summer.
India is accelerating the commissioning of wind power plants and battery energy storage systems to address electricity supply risks caused by natural gas shortages. The shift in energy strategy follows market disruptions linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has led to increased price volatility and supply constraints in the Middle East.
While natural gas accounts for only about 2% of the country's total power generation, it is a vital component during peak demand periods and heatwaves, contributing approximately 8 gigawatts of power. Junior power minister Shripad Naik addressed the situation in parliament, noting that generators are currently seeking alternative energy sources to maintain stability.
