India Seeks Steelmaking Raw Materials from Three Nations
India will meet with Argentina, Indonesia, and Oman next month to secure steelmaking raw materials. The move aims to meet rising demand and boost exports.
India is set to engage in high-level discussions with Argentina, Indonesia, and Oman next month. The primary objective is to secure a stable supply of critical raw materials for steelmaking, including coking coal and iron ore, while also gaining access to advanced manufacturing technologies.

These negotiations are scheduled to take place during an upcoming global steel summit, which the Indian government has identified as its largest international industry event. As the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, trailing only China, the nation is looking to mitigate supply chain risks and meet the demands of its rapidly growing economy.
To support its stainless steel industry, the country currently relies heavily on ferronickel imports. Indonesia is a key partner in this regard, as it holds the largest nickel ore reserves globally. Additionally, the government is looking to build upon a recent agreement with Brazil to expand cooperation in the mining and minerals sector, particularly for iron ore supplies.
The strategic outreach to Argentina is specifically focused on securing lithium and other critical minerals. These resources are vital for NMDC Limited, the state-owned mining company, as the country seeks to bolster its production of batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Argentina currently ranks as the world's fourth-largest lithium producer.
This diversification strategy is part of a broader push to ensure the availability of coking coal, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Beyond domestic infrastructure needs, there is a concerted effort to expand steel exports into Asian and Middle Eastern markets. This shift is intended to offset the potential impact of the European Union’s carbon tax on traditional export routes.
However, the sector faces immediate hurdles. A significant gas crisis, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, has disrupted production at smaller steel manufacturing units. Furthermore, JSW Steel Limited has recently issued warnings regarding potential operational shutdowns linked to these supply constraints.
