Carbajal leads with 52.5% of the vote, while Smith follows at 39.5% based on results released Thursday afternoon. The outcome sets a clear trajectory for the general election in a district grappling with high living costs and housing shortages.
### Carbajal and Smith Advance to General Election According to the California Secretary of State, Carbajal, 61, received 58,308 votes by Thursday afternoon. Smith, a 46-year-old retired Navy commander, earned 43,907 votes. Carbajal and Smith outperformed 45-year-old graduate student Sarah Bacon, who took 6.1% of the vote, and educator Helena Pasquarella, who finished with 1.9%.
