The International Monetary Fund has warned that the United States must establish a robust and credible plan to reduce its fiscal deficit. Rodrigo Valdes, the director of the IMF's fiscal affairs department, stated that the current deficit of 7% of GDP should be lowered by approximately four percentage points to maintain long-term financial stability.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Valdes explained that while the American government has the benefit of time, delaying fiscal consolidation could lead to increased financial pressures. He emphasized that although markets are currently providing the country with space, they are not as forgiving as they have been in the past.

Its important that markets today give the US space on its debt levels.

Valdes further explained that as more time passes without a clear plan, the potential for market pressure increases. He underscored that the United States cannot wait indefinitely to begin the process of debt reduction.

At the same time, the more time passes, the more pressure could build down the road So its very important to deliver on this.

The IMF official concluded that establishing a robust and credible framework for fiscal consolidation is essential for the country to navigate future economic challenges and ensure the sustainability of its debt levels.
