IMF projects Angola debt will reach legal limit soon
The IMF projects Angola will reach its public debt ceiling in the medium term. The fund advises using oil windfalls to cut debt and build fiscal buffers.
The International Monetary Fund warned Angola that public debt will reach its legal ceiling in the medium term as oil production declines. Higher prices for Brent Crude Oil currently provide a temporary fiscal offset and improved international market access. Investors face rising gross financing needs as the nation exhausts its fiscal buffers under the Fiscal Sustainability Law.
The IMF issued the warning late Friday, urging the government to use current revenue windfalls to cut debt. Declining oil production continues to weigh on the national fiscal position despite the recent price surge.
