Hungary threatens to cut energy exports to Ukraine over Russian oil dispute

Budapest is considering cutting energy exports to Ukraine unless Russian oil shipments resume. The move escalates a dispute over the Druzhba pipeline flows.

The Hungarian government HUHU is considering a proposal to stop electricity and natural gas exports to Ukraine UAUA unless the Ukrainian government allows for the resumption of Russian crude oil shipments via the Druzhba pipeline. This potential measure, which is currently under discussion as of February 19, 2026, follows a significant disruption in regional energy transit. Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his administration have indicated that the continuation of vital energy supplies to their neighbor is contingent on the restoration of oil flows that have been blocked for several weeks.
The impact of a potential cutoff would be substantial for Kyiv’s energy security. According to data from ExPro (Kyiv-based consultancy), Hungary and Slovakia SKSK together accounted for 68 percent of all electricity imported by Ukraine during the current month. Additionally, Hungary currently supplies approximately one-third of Ukraine's current natural gas imports. A halt to these exports would directly affect Ukraine’s energy supplies and likely escalate cross-border trade and political tensions.
