Gold prices rose on Wednesday as a softening dollar and a decline in energy benchmarks, including Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil, helped ease investor anxiety regarding inflation and the potential for higher interest rates. The market remains focused on geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran, which continue to provide a backdrop of uncertainty for global markets. Spot gold increased 1.6% to reach $4,545.34 per ounce by 0751 GMT, marking a recovery from a four-month low of $4,097.99 recorded on Monday. American gold futures for April delivery also saw significant movement, jumping 3.3% to $4,545.20. The precious metal's performance is currently tied to shifting expectations for central bank policy and currency fluctuations. Christopher Wong, a strategist at OCBC, noted that the recent rebound indicates strong underlying support for the asset. > Near-term, gold is likely to stay sensitive to Federal Reserve policy path expectations, USD and geopolitical developments, but the rebound suggests dips may continue to find support unless real yields move meaningfully higher. Energy prices retreated after the American administration suggested progress in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict with Tehran. However, the Iranian military subsequently rejected these claims, stating that the American government was effectively negotiating with itself. While rising energy costs typically fuel inflation and increase the appeal of bullion as a hedge, the resulting pressure for higher interest rates often dampens demand for the non-yielding metal. Investors have recently adjusted their outlook for monetary tightening, with the probability of a rate hike by December falling to 16% from 25% late last week. Analysts at JP Morgan indicated that the current price levels might represent a tactical opportunity for buyers. > Despite gold prices trading ~17% below pre-conflict levels amid USD strength and broad-based de-risking, this flush has historically been a tactical dip to buy, and the bullish case strengthens the longer the conflict persists. Other precious metals also experienced gains during the session. Silver rose 2.6% to $73.08 per ounce, while Platinum climbed 0.9% to $1,951.35. Palladium rounded out the sector's gains, increasing 1.5% to $1,460.60.
