Gold prices jump as soft inflation data revives hopes for Federal Reserve rate cuts
Gold prices rose over one percent on Friday after cooler than expected inflation data. The report boosted market hopes for Federal Reserve rate cuts this year.
The U.S. Labor Department reported on Friday that the Consumer Price Index for January rose 0.2%, coming in below the 0.3% increase expected by economists. This announcement immediately impacted the bullion market, where gold prices rose by more than 1% as investors renewed their expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts. The weaker-than-expected inflation reading has shifted the focus of market participants back toward monetary easing.
According to data from LSEG, the market is now pricing in approximately 63 basis points of interest-rate cuts for the United States
US this year, with the first cut anticipated to occur in July. This rapid market re-pricing follows a period of uncertainty triggered by a strong employment report earlier in the week, which had previously dampened hopes for near-term rate reductions. The latest inflation data has provided a counter-narrative, suggesting that price pressures may be cooling faster than anticipated.
