Regulators Trail Banks in AI Adoption and Oversight
A report reveals central banks lack the data and technology to monitor AI risks. Authorities trail financial firms in adoption while facing new security threats.
Global financial regulators lag private firms in AI adoption, with only 20% of authorities reporting advanced use of the technology. Private institutions are adopting AI at more than twice the rate of their supervisors. This "empirical blind spot" limits the ability of regulators to monitor systemic risks from autonomous models like Anthropic's Mythos.
### Why Regulators Are Falling Behind Data from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance shows only 24% of authorities collect data on industry AI adoption. Another 43% have no plans to start tracking this data within the next two years. The research, prepared with the International Monetary Fund and the Bank for International Settlements, surveyed 130 central banks and 350 financial institutions.
