Global Markets Stabilize as Oil Prices Retreat Below 100
Global markets stabilized as oil prices fell below 100 dollars following comments from President Trump. China also reported a significant surge in exports.
Global markets are navigating a period of significant volatility as the ongoing geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran continues to impact energy prices. Crude oil has seen dramatic intraday swings exceeding $30 per barrel, reaching a four-year peak of $120 before retreating below $100. This fluctuation followed statements from the U.S. administration regarding the status of the conflict, which briefly calmed investor concerns.

The stabilization of oil prices late Monday triggered a recovery in global equity markets. In Asia, the KOSPI index in South Korea rose by nearly 6%, while the Nikkei in Japan gained approximately 3%. In the currency and bond markets, U.S. Treasury yields fell and the dollar remained steady against major peers, providing a lift to gold prices. U.S. stock futures also signaled a positive opening despite the previous day's turbulence.
However, the situation remains precarious as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps continues to assert that oil exports will be halted as long as military engagements persist. The U.S. presidency has responded with threats of further retaliation if oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted.
"The decision was just about timing."
A G7 official noted that while finance ministers have considered a joint release of oil reserves to stabilize prices, they have not yet taken action. Domestically, the impact is being felt at the pump, with a majority of Americans expressing concern that fuel costs will continue to rise.
In economic data, China reported a substantial increase in its trade surplus for the start of 2026. Exports surged by 21.8% year-on-year, driven by high demand for electronics. This growth occurred despite a decline in bilateral trade with the U.S. and preceded the most recent spike in energy costs.
Corporate earnings remain a focal point for investors later today. Oracle Corporation is scheduled to report its results, with markets looking for evidence that its significant investments in artificial intelligence and data centers are yielding results. Additionally, Domino's Pizza, Inc. is also among the companies set to release financial updates.
Key events to monitor today include the U.S. February existing home sales report, a 3-year Treasury note auction, and corporate results from major retailers and technology firms.
