Airlines Hike Ticket Prices as Fuel Costs Reach 200 Dollars
Airlines are raising fares and surcharges as jet fuel costs nearly double. Carriers like United and SAS have also cut flights to manage rising expenses.
The global aviation industry is facing a significant financial challenge as jet fuel prices surge amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Fuel costs have climbed from a range of $85 to $90 per barrel to as high as $200 in recent weeks, a critical shift for an industry where fuel typically accounts for up to a quarter of all operating expenses. In response, carriers worldwide are adjusting their pricing, capacity, and financial forecasts.
In Europe and the Middle East, AEGEAN AIRLINES of Greece expects its first-quarter results to be notably impacted by fuel spikes and the suspension of regional flights. AIR FRANCE-KLM has already announced ticket price increases for long-haul routes, with fares set to rise by 50 euros per round trip. Meanwhile, EASYJET PLC Chief Financial Officer Kenton Jarvis warned of upcoming price adjustments for the summer season.
