GKN Abandons European Rare Earth Magnet Factory Plans
GKN Powder Metallurgy has cancelled plans for a European rare earth magnet factory. The move follows a US takeover and highlights competition from China.
GKN Powder Metallurgy has abandoned its plans to establish a rare earth permanent magnet production facility in Europe, a move that underscores the region's difficulty in competing with the market dominance of China. This decision represents a blow to European efforts to secure a domestic supply chain for critical minerals used in electric vehicles, electronics, and defense. Currently, the global sector is heavily concentrated, with Chinese entities controlling 90% of processed output and 70% of mining. Industry experts have noted that Europe is falling behind the United States in terms of providing the financial incentives necessary to foster a local rare earths industry.
