Ghana selects local firm to operate Damang gold mine
Ghana selected Engineers and Planners to run the Damang gold mine. The local firm secured the lease after proving access to 505 million dollars in financing.
The government of Ghana has officially selected the local mining services firm Engineers & Planners Ltd to take over operations at the Damang Gold mine. This decision follows the rejection of a lease-renewal bid by the previous operator, GOLD FIELDS LTD, as part of a broader national strategy to increase local participation in the extractive sector. Ghana had previously taken control of the mine last year, ending a period of automatic extensions to assess local bids for a potential $1 billion revival of the asset.
The Minerals Commission recommended Engineers & Planners after the company demonstrated its ability to secure $505 million in financing, surpassing the government's minimum requirement of $500 million. The selection process also evaluated technical expertise, equipment availability, safety records, and local content commitments.
