Germany probes Klesch Group acquisition of BP refinery
Germany is reviewing the Klesch Group's purchase of a BP refinery in Gelsenkirchen. The probe reportedly examines the owner's British nationality for security.
The government of Germany has initiated an investment review concerning the Klesch Group's proposed purchase of an oil refinery from BP PLC. The facility, located in Gelsenkirchen, is a key piece of energy infrastructure within the region.

According to a report by Spiegel, which cited confidential documents, the review was triggered in part by questions surrounding the nationality of Gary Klesch. The owner of the Klesch Group previously held United States citizenship but has since become a British citizen. The economy ministry is examining the implications of the change in ownership for national interests.
A spokesperson for the ministry declined to provide specific details regarding the status of the review, citing legal protections for corporate information.
No further comment could be made because such procedures involve companies’ trade and business secrets, which are protected by law.
As of the report's publication, both BP and the Klesch Group have not issued public statements regarding the investigation. The scrutiny highlights the increasing regulatory oversight of foreign investments in critical European industrial assets as governments seek to secure domestic energy supply chains.
