Germany faces 1 billion euro cost for power relief

Germany faces one billion euros in extra costs after the EU approved expanded power relief. The move allows firms to combine subsidies to offset high energy prices.

Germany faces approximately €1 billion in additional budget costs after the European Commission allowed stronger electricity price relief for industry. Brussels agreed that a planned state-subsidized industrial electricity price can be combined with existing electricity price compensation starting in 2026. The move allows companies to use both instruments simultaneously to offset high energy costs.

### Dual Relief for Industry Economy Minister Katherina Reiche told Handelsblatt on Tuesday that the European Commission accepted arguments for dual support. Reiche said the step is necessary to offset exceptionally high energy costs. Brussels agreed that the state-subsidized industrial electricity price can be used alongside existing electricity price compensation.
