German investor morale improves unexpectedly in May
German investor sentiment rose to -10.2 in May, beating expectations. High energy prices and inflation still weigh on the economy amid the ongoing Iran war.
Germany investor morale rose unexpectedly to minus 10.2 points in May. The ZEW economic research institute reading climbed from minus 17.2 in April, beating Reuters poll expectations of a decline to minus 19.8. Sentiment improvements suggest investors see a potential floor despite persistent war-linked headwinds and a halved 2026 growth forecast of 0.5%.
Financial market experts are hoping the Iran conflict will end soon. However, weak industrial production, rising energy costs, and inflation above 2% continue to constrain the economy. The spike in oil and gas prices following United States and Israel joint strikes on Iran on February 28 has compounded these pressures as Germany struggles to regain momentum in the wake of the COVID pandemic.
