FTSE 100 falls as oil prices surge and peace talks fade
The FTSE 100 fell 0.8 percent today as Brent crude surpassed 100 dollars per barrel amid stalled U.S.-Iran negotiations. Higher costs hit travel and retail stocks.
Equity markets in the United Kingdom faced significant downward pressure on Thursday as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensified. The blue-chip FTSE 100 index declined by 0.8% to 10,388.84 points, while the midcap FTSE 250 saw a steeper drop of 1.1%. The primary catalyst for the sell-off was the fading hope for a diplomatic resolution between the United States and Iran, coupled with a sharp spike in energy costs.
Brent Crude Oil surged past the $100 per barrel mark after Iran tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has stated it will not reopen the critical waterway until the American naval blockade is lifted. This spike in fuel costs immediately impacted the travel sector, with WIZZ AIR HOLDINGS PLC falling 3% and CARNIVAL PLC dropping 2.4%.
