In a significant development at the World Economic Forum in Davos, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has called on European nations to consider economic retaliation against the United States if tariffs are imposed on NATO allies. This comes in response to President [Donald Trump] donald trump's insistence that Greenland should become part of the [US]
US, coupled with his threat to levy tariffs on eight European NATO countries unless the U.S. is permitted to acquire Greenland.
Rasmussen, who served as Denmark's Prime Minister from 2001 to 2009 and as NATO Secretary General from 2009 to 2014, described this situation as the biggest challenge to NATO since its establishment in 1949. He outlined a three-point plan to counteract these pressures, which includes updating the 1951 U.S.-Denmark military agreement to bolster NATO's presence in Greenland, creating an investment pact for U.S. and European firms to exploit Greenland's mineral resources, and establishing a stabilization and resilience compact to prevent Chinese and Russian investments in critical sectors.
