Ford Energy signs five-year storage agreement with EDF
Ford Energy will supply up to 20 gigawatt-hours of battery storage to EDF over five years. Deliveries from the Kentucky facility are set to begin in 2028.
Ford Motor Co signed a five-year agreement to supply 20 gigawatt-hours of battery storage capacity to renewable energy developer EDF, allowing the company to monetize infrastructure built for electric vehicles. Data centers across North America are accelerating backup power orders as artificial intelligence services strain electricity grids. The deal underscores how automakers are pivoting away from automotive batteries toward the faster-growing energy storage market.
Ford Energy will procure 4 GWh of battery energy storage systems annually under the agreement. The automaker launched this business after a $19.5 billion writedown on EV programs last year, repurposing a Kentucky plant originally intended for EV battery production.
