FINNAIR OYJ reported a narrower-than-expected comparable operating loss for the first quarter of 2026, bolstered by a 12.1% increase in revenue as demand for travel to Asia strengthened. The national airline of Finland saw its financial performance improve significantly compared to the previous year, despite regional disruptions in the Middle East impacting global flight patterns. The comparable operating loss for the January-March period was 0.6 million euros ($0.71 million), a sharp reduction from the 62.6 million euro loss reported in the same quarter a year ago, which had been exacerbated by labor conflicts. This result surpassed the expectations of analysts, who had forecasted an average loss of 2.1 million euros for the period. Revenue for the quarter rose to 778.1 million euros, up from the prior year's levels. The company noted that its strategic focus on cost management and the recovery of Asian markets provided a necessary buffer against the rising costs of aviation fuel. > "Successful cost management and, in particular, increased demand for our Asian flights counterbalanced the negative impact of the sharp rise in jet fuel prices," CEO Turkka Kuusisto said. Looking ahead, the airline warned that the ongoing war in the Middle East presents potential risks regarding the availability of fuel. Such disruptions could hinder capacity growth and affect the final financial results for the year. Nevertheless, Finnair has left its full-year 2026 guidance unchanged, estimating total revenue between 3.3 billion and 3.4 billion euros and a comparable operating result ranging from 120 million to 190 million euros.
