European stocks slide amid Middle East blockade threats
European shares fell Monday as Middle East talks collapsed and the US prepared a blockade. Higher oil prices fueled inflation and interest rate hike fears.
European equity markets faced downward pressure on Monday as geopolitical instability in the Middle East intensified. The collapse of diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran has dampened investor sentiment, particularly following Washington's decision to implement a naval blockade around the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This move threatens to choke off Iranian oil exports after diplomatic efforts failed to produce a breakthrough in the ongoing conflict, which began on February 28.
The pan-European benchmark index retreated 0.7% to 610.44 points during early trading sessions. Regional performance mirrored this decline, with the GLOBAL X DAX GERMANY ETF in Germany falling by 1%. Similarly, the X FTSE 100 1C in the United Kingdom saw a decrease of 0.4%.
